 Phi Phi Island

Phi Phi Island is a jewel in the Andaman Sea with beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise waters. It’s close to both Phuket and Krabi. Day trips can be taken from either or spend a few nights here and enjoy the true island resort atmosphere.
There are actually two Phi Phi Islands – Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. Phi Phi Don is the main island and is desribed below. Phi Phi Leh is part of a nature reserve and was made famous by the Leonardo Di Caprio movie ‘The Beach’. Day tours to Phi Phi Leh can be made from Phi Phi Don (or Phuket or Krabi for that matter)

There are about 2000 people that live on Phi Phi Don – made up of Thai and Westerners. There are no cars – only 4 motorbikes, a truck and a tractor! Everyone gets around by foot or bike.
The island is made up of 2 mountains with a sandy area inbetween them, making two incredibly picturesque bays. There’s a maze of shops to walk through and a pleasant choice of restaurants, bars, dive shops, dairys, souvenir and internet cafes.
Phi Phi Don is the place to go for water adventure with deep sea fishing trips, kayaking, diving and snorkelling. Infact there are dozens of dive shops plying for your business. Diving is world class and highlights include diving with sharks and the sunken ferry ‘King Cruiser’. Best months for diving are December to April when water visibility is at its clearest.
Most people just enjoy the beauty of the beaches so a day can easily spent sunbathing and swimming in Ao Ton Sai Bay with meal breaks in one of the nearby restaurants. Take a good book and simply enjoy. If you need some sports activity on the island there is rock climbing on some limestone cliffs.
The tsunami of December 2004 destroyed a lot of Phi Phi Don. Many locals and tourists died. The island has recovered with tremendous speed and although the scars will remain for sometime yet, much is back to normal with at least 12 hotels open plus dozens of guesthouses. Tours depart daily – weather permitting. For a good update (written in August 2005) click here.
